• 国(くに) = Country or nation.
• 外国(がいこく) = Literally “outside country” (every country outside the borders of Japan).
• 外国人(がいこくじん) = “Outside country person” (foreign national / person from abroad).

The Three Registers of Reference

Depending on context and politeness level, Japanese uses three distinct terms:
