Country, person, language: 〜人 and 〜語

Mental Model: The Suffix Lego System

In European languages, country names, nationalities, and languages morph unpredictably: Sweden → Swede → Swedish, France → French, Germany → German.

In Japanese, the system is 100% modular. Once you know the name of a country, you simply attach one of two single-kanji suffixes:

• Country + 人(じん) = Person / Nationality (“citizen of that country”).
• Country + 語(ご) = Language (“speech of that country”).

The Standard Formula in Action

For the vast majority of nations, the formula works like clockwork:

• Japan (日本(にほん)) · Person: 日本人(にほんじん) (“Japanese person”) · Language: 日本語(にほんご) (“Japanese language”)
• Sweden (スウェーデン) · Person: スウェーデン人(スウェーデンじん) (“Swedish person”) · Language: スウェーデン語(スウェーデンご) (“Swedish language”)
• France (フランス) · Person: フランス人(フランスじん) (“French person”) · Language: フランス語(フランスご) (“French language”)
• Korea (韓国(かんこく)) · Person: 韓国人(かんこくじん) (“Korean person”) · Language: 韓国語(かんこくご) (“Korean language”)
• China (中国(ちゅうごく)) · Person: 中国人(ちゅうごくじん) (“Chinese person”) · Language: 中国語(ちゅうごくご) (“Chinese language”)

The Essential Language Exceptions

Not all languages share their name with a single modern country:

• English (英語(えいご)): Never say *アメリカ語 or *イギリス語! English derives from the historical kanji abbreviation for England (英吉利(イギリス) → 英(えい)): 英語(えいご). Native speakers from English-speaking countries are アメリカ人(アメリカじん) (American), イギリス人(イギリスじん) (British), and オーストラリア人(オーストラリアじん) (Australian), but all speak 英語.
• Spanish (スペイン語(スペインご)): Spoken across Spain (スペイン) and most of Latin America (メキシコ, コロンビア, アルゼンチン).
• Arabic (アラビア語(アラビアご)): Spoken across North Africa and the Middle East (not tied to a single country name).

Conversational Politeness

When inquiring about someone's nationality or language skills:

• Inquiring: お国は どちらですか。(おくには どちらですか。) (“Which country are you from?”)
• Stating: カナダ人です。英語と フランス語を 話します。(カナダじんです。えいごと フランスごを はなします。) (“I'm Canadian. I speak English and French.”).
