The Two-Tier Politeness Divide

Knowing when to keep or drop ございます is the first real lesson in Japanese social hierarchy:

• Tier 1: Casual Peer (おはよう):
• Used strictly with family members, close friends, and classmates of the same age or younger.
• Calling out おはよう！ as you walk into a classroom or kitchen is cheerful and warm.
• Tier 2: Polite Standard (おはようございます):
• The universal default for teachers, professors, bosses, coworkers, neighbors, and service staff.
• In polite encounters, always accompany the phrase with a crisp nod or shallow bow (会釈(えしゃく)).

The Workplace “First Greeting” Convention

Here is an essential cultural rule that textbooks rarely explain: in Japanese workplaces, おはようございます is used at ANY time of the day or night when two colleagues encounter each other for the first time during their shift!

Whether you work in television, entertainment, convenience stores, or hospital night shifts: • Clock in at 8:00 AM? Say おはようございます. • Clock in for an afternoon shift at 3:00 PM? Say おはようございます. • Clock in for the graveyard shift at 10:00 PM? Still say おはようございます!
