Say what you want to do

Says what you yourself want to do.

JLPTN5
verb stem + たい~ stem + tai

I want to do [something]

Example Sentences

Drop ます from the polite form (食べます食べ) and add たい to express your own wish to do something. It conjugates like an -adjective, so the past becomes たかった and the negative たくない. Use it for yourself, not to state someone else's desire as a fact.

Conjugation

食べる食べたい
ichidan
飲む飲みたい
godan
行く行きたい
godan
するしたい
irregular

Tips and Common Traps

Hana· Key point

Use たい to open up conversations — 何が食べたい?なにがたべたい? (What do you want to eat?) is one of the most useful questions you'll learn.

Maru· Common trap

With たい the object often takes where you would expect : カレーが食べたいカレーがたべたい (I want to eat curry). カレーを食べたい is heard too, but is the safer choice while you are learning.
