Asking Where: どこ, どこか, どこも, どこでも

どこ is the interrogative member of the spatial Ko-So-A-Do family (ここ here, そこ there, あそこ over there, どこ where).

In Japanese, question words never force inversion of the sentence: you take a standard statement and drop どこ directly into the slot where the location would sit.

The Core Inquiry Patterns

Master the three everyday questions for finding people and places:

• 1. Where is [Item / Place]? ([Thing] は どこですか): 駅は どこですか。(えきは どこですか。) (“Where is the station?”) · お手洗いは どこですか。(おてあらいは どこですか。) (“Where is the restroom?”) · 田中さんは どこですか。(たなかさんは どこですか。) (“Where is Mr. Tanaka?”).

By attaching particles directly to どこ, you create an entire matrix of spatial concepts:

• どこ (Where - Question): どこへ 行きますか。 (“Where are you going?”)
• どこか (Somewhere - Indefinite): Attaching か turns the question word into an indefinite concept: 週末、どこかへ 行きましたか。(しゅうまつ、どこかへ いきましたか。) (“Did you go somewhere over the weekend?”).
• どこも (Nowhere - Total Negation): Attaching も followed by a negative verb expresses zero occurrence: どこへも 行きませんでした。(どこへも いきませんでした。) (“I went nowhere / I didn't go anywhere.”).
• どこでも (Anywhere - Unlimited Choice): Attaching でも means any location is acceptable: どこでも いいですよ。 (“Anywhere is fine with me!”).

Foreigner Trap: どこか vs どこ

Notice the massive difference between these two questions:

• どこへ 行きますか。 = “Where are you going?” (Open question; expects a specific location as the answer).
• どこかへ 行きますか。 = “Are you going somewhere?” (Yes/No question; expects はい or いいえ).
