けど attaches directly to the plain or polite form of the first clause and introduces a second clause that contrasts with or qualifies it. It is the casual counterpart of the more formal が and the written けれども. Because it softens a statement rather than flatly contradicting it, native speakers use けど even when there is only mild contrast or when trailing off politely.
Tips and Common Traps
けど is great for softening what comes next — you concede one thing, then say the point: 高いけど、おいしいです (it's expensive, but it's delicious). You'll hear it all the time in everyday conversation.
You can say just 〜けど and stop there — leaving sentence B unsaid. It trails off politely: 遅いですけど… (it's a bit slow, but…) implies a problem without stating it bluntly.
