In Japanese, adding 〜ぐらい (or its unvoiced counterpart 〜くらい) wraps a number or quantity in a soft, non-committal cloud. It means “about”, “approximately”, or “around”:

• 千円ぐらい: “About 1,000 yen (price).”
• 三時間ぐらい: “About three hours (duration).”
• 十人ぐらい: “About ten people (headcount).”

It attaches directly to the counter or numeral without any particles in between.

The Fundamental Divide: 〜ぐらい vs 〜ごろ

This is one of the most tested distinctions in elementary Japanese. Keep this rule clear:

• 〜ぐらい (Span, Duration, or Quantity):
• Measures how much or how long an action lasts:
• 三時間ぐらい勉強しました: “I studied for about three hours (duration with 時間).”
• 五キロぐらい走りました: “I ran about 5 km (distance).”

• 〜ごろ (-goro) (Specific Point on a Clock or Calendar):
• Points to when something happens on a dial or calendar:
• 三時ごろ会います: “We will meet around 3:00 (point in time with 時).”
• 来週ごろ: “Around next week.”

Summary Formula: If it answers “How long / How many?” use ぐらい. If it answers “At what time?” use ごろ!

Voiced vs Unvoiced: ぐらい vs くらい

Both forms are entirely interchangeable in modern Japanese:

• ぐらい: Slightly more voiced, phonetic ease, dominant in conversational speech.
• くらい: Crisp and unvoiced, frequently preferred in written prose and literature.

Neither is incorrect; you can use whichever rolls off your tongue more naturally!
