Give and receive things (あげる · くれる · もらう)
Japanese uses three distinct verbs depending on the direction of giving relative to the speaker: あげる (give outward), くれる (give inward to me), and もらう (receive from someone).

Giving verbs in Japanese express personal perspective and empathy. When the speaker gives to someone else, use あげる (友達に花をあげました). When someone gives something to the speaker (or the speaker's in-group family), you must use くれる (友達が私に花をくれました) — never あげる. When focusing on the recipient receiving a gift, use もらう with the giver marked by に or から (友達に花をもらいました).
