The pronoun あれ points to an inanimate object that is physically distant from BOTH the speaker and the listener:

• あれは何ですか(あれはなんですか) (are wa nan desu ka): “What is that thing over there?”
• あれを見てください(あれをみてください) (are o mite kudasai): “Please look at that over there!”
• あれが富士山です(あれがふじさんです) (are ga fujisan desu): “That over there is Mount Fuji.”

As an independent pronoun, あれ stands completely alone and takes case particles directly: あれは, あれが, あれを. When ordering at a food stall with distant displays: • あれと同じのをください(あれとおなじのをごください): “Please give me the same thing as that one over there.”
