Change い-adjectives for negative and past (〜くない · かった)

Drop the final い and attach くない for negative, かった for past, and くなかった for negative past: 高い (expensive) becomes 高くない (not expensive) and 高かった (was expensive).

JLPTN5
い-adjective [-い] + くない / かった / くなかったi-adjective inflection

Unlike English adjectives, Japanese い-adjectives contain verb-like tense and polarity built directly into the word. You never say 高いではありません. Instead, the final sound shifts: drop い and attach くない for non-past negative, かった for past affirmative, and くなかった for past negative. To speak politely, simply add です to the end of any of these four forms: 高くないです (it is not expensive), 高かったです (it was expensive). Remember the single irregular adjective: いい (good) conjugates from its root よい → よくない, よかった, よくなかった.
