How it works

Japanese says literally “a rabbit exists” where English says “there's a rabbit.” が (subject) marks うさぎ (rabbit) as the subject, and いる (there is) is the plain verb of existence used for living things (ある (there is, things) covers objects). With no topic or copula needed, the bare subject plus verb is all it takes.
