I'm home, I'm hungry

How it works

ただいま (I'm home) is a set greeting you call out as you walk in the door. Then comes a common idiom: literally “the stomach became empty.” (subject) marks お腹おなか (stomach) as the subject, and 空いたすいた (became empty) is the plain past of 空くすく (to empty). Japanese describes hunger as something happening to your stomach, not as “I am hungry.” The plain past with no polite ending keeps it casual.
