How it works

This sentence uses two different markers for two jobs. は (topic) sets 猫ねこ (cat) as the topic — “as for the cat…” — while が (subject) marks 魚さかな (fish) as what the feeling targets. With 大好きだいすき (love), the pattern reads literally “as for the cat, fish is loved,” i.e. “the cat loves fish.”
