How it works

おかえり (welcome home) is the set greeting you say to someone coming home. は (topic) raises 今日(きょう) (today) as the topic — “as for today…”. どう (how) asks “how”, and だった (was) is the casual past of the copula, so the whole thing means a relaxed “how was it?”
