How it works

は (topic) raises これ (this) as the topic — “as for this…”. The question word 何なに (what) simply sits where the answer would go, so the word order doesn’t flip the way English “What is this?” does. There’s no copula and no question particle か (question): in casual speech the rising tone and the ？ (?) alone make it a question.
