How it works

Japanese says literally “a car exists” where English says “I have a car”. が (subject) points out the subject (車くるま (car)), and ある (exists, things) is the verb of existence used for objects (いる (exists, living) is for people and animals). It stays plain and casual — no polite です (is) or ます (polite) on the end.
