Say what something was or was not (でした / じゃありませんでした)

Use でした to say what something was in the past, and じゃありませんでした to say what it was not.

Polite past of です: was / was not

To describe past states with nouns or な-adjectives in polite speech, conjugate です (desu):

  • Affirmative past: でした (deshita) ('was')
  • きのうは 雨でした(きのうは あめでした) (yesterday was rain)
  • 公園は 静かでした(こうえんは しずかでした) (the park was quiet)
  • Negative past: じゃありませんでした (ja arimasen deshita) ('was not')
  • 学生じゃありませんでした(がくせいじゃありませんでした) (was not a student)
  • 暇じゃありませんでした(ひまじゃありませんでした) (was not free)

Notice that い-adjectives conjugate on their own (暑かったです(あつかったです) (was hot)) and do not take bare でした.
