Shall I heat up the bento?
- Kenji

Oh, yes, please.
- Yuki

Hey, what's this?
- Kenji

…No idea. Um, excuse me. What's this?
- Poko
Oh, this? It's a sakura bean bun!
- Kenji

Sakura… bean bun. How much is it?
- Poko
It's 150 yen.
- Kenji

Then two of these too, please.
- Yuki

Huh, two?
- Poko
Sure, two sakura bean buns. That's 800 yen in all!
- Kenji

…Huh? Sorry, one more time, please.
- Poko
Sure. Eight hundred yen.
- Kenji

800 yen…
- Poko
How would you like to pay?
- Kenji

Oh, cash.
- Poko
Out of a thousand yen.
- Poko
Here's 200 yen change. Do you need the receipt?

The lesson
What the video teaches, to read at your own pace.
What the clerk asks first
- ポイントカードは お持ちですか
- Do you have a point card?
- 袋は ご利用ですか
- Would you like a bag?
- お弁当、温めますか
- Shall I heat the bento?
The clerk asks a few questions while he rings up your things. Each one starts with the thing it is about, so you listen for the first word. ポイントカードは お持ちですか asks whether you have a point card. 袋は ご利用ですか asks whether you want a bag. お弁当、温めますか asks whether you want your bento heated. Shop staff use these polite words with customers, and you only need to understand them.
After the price
- お支払いは
- How will you pay?
- レシートは よろしいですか
- Do you need the receipt?
After he says the price, the clerk asks two more things. お支払いは asks how you will pay, and it starts with the thing it is about, the paying. When he gives you your change, レシートは よろしいですか asks whether you need the receipt.
Your answers
- 大丈夫です
- No, thank youthe words say: I'm fine
- いえ
- Noa short, soft いいえ
- はい、お願いします
- Yes, pleasewhen you do want it
- 現金で
- In cashhow you will pay
So how do you answer the clerk? You can answer most of his questions with 大丈夫です. It means I'm fine, and at the register it means no, thank you. For the point card, Kenji says いえ, which is a short and soft いいえ. When you do want something, like the bento heated, you say はい、お願いします. And when the clerk asks how you will pay, 現金で means in cash.
